Maybe so. The Jicarillas and Navajos regularly raided Mexican settlements and ranches and faced brutal reprisals. What am I missing?

My name is Eugene Field of Patterson, CA. My daughter and I do extensive family history research. My mother's uncle, Hugh Grasz, died at Ft. Walla Walla, WA in 1910. He is buried there. We know very little about him. Several years ago in corresponding with the Walla Walla genealogical society we found out that Hugh married Katherine R. Peasner. He then died just two years later.

I was searching the internet today to see if I could locate her in census records and possibly find out if she remarried. In my search I came across this website and read about her father William Peasner. This is absolutely fascinating!

Would you be willing to give me permission to use your information on my website? I will give you complete credit for all the information contained in your article.

Thank you very much,

Eugene Field

A huge proportion of men from Indiana volunteered to fight in the war with Mexico. They served in 5 Indiana regiments as well as in a number of Federal regiments. Most of these men returned to civilian life after the end of the war.

The material is a complete listing of everything of ordnance concern to equip a Mexican War era.

I can send you a scan of the information. In the mean time, I'll have my son fix the link.

Robert Wright of Terry Haute is my great-great grandfather. He returned to Terre Haute where he was a farrier and maintained that profession during the Civil War. Terre Haute, I understand, was a stopping point for union soldiers on their way ?

Bill,

The authors of Sharps Carbines, McAuly and Mowbray (?), listed some of the A Compy ordnance returns from around 1857. I am fairly certain Springfield does not have these records, but it don't hurt to ask. I've found that most of the surviving slant breach Sharps that have survived are civilian models.

I turned some of my Stevenson research over to the family's website. Have you seen it? If not I can send it to you.

I'm intrigued by his brief reference to a trip he took to Nicaragua to see about participating in Walker's takeover. Do you have any knowledge of this incident? Stevenson obviously wrote this manuscript years after he left the military and it's hard to separate truth from confused memory and folklore. One think is for certain--he crossed the country and was stationed at Ft. Tejon, California 1854-56.

My plan is to include some of his passages in a forthcoming book I'm writing for the University of New Mexico Press. At a later date, I shall attempt to have the whole manuscript published in a historical journal.
