I am making my way through this blog and enjoying it greatly. I don't know where I should stop and say "thank you" but this is as good a spot as any. Thank you.

Will,
Sounds like a great find. I look forward to your publication. If you hit a snag on NM, you might want to speak with Bob Clark of The Arthur H. Clark Co. I suspect that one of your challenges might be sorting out the inaccuracies and hyperbole that crept into Stevenson's reminiscences 25 years after the events. (I've already spotted a few.) For the part of the manuscript dealing with the Salt Lake City wintering-over, I suggest that you take a look at my article, "Sex, Subalterns, and Steptoe: Army Behavior, Mormon Rage, and Utah War Anxieties," "Utah Historical Quarterly" 76 (Summer 2008): 227-46.

Bill

It has never been published and I'm working with the University of New Mexico to annotate and publish it. Stevenson published a book of his Civil War experiences, Boots and Saddles, in 1878.

I'd like to learn more about the Stevenson Journal. Was it ever published (1879?) or is this the first time it's appeared in print?

Einar
A couple of wounded died a few days after the battle. Did you ever receive my final draft of Cieneguilla?

One very common mistake is to assume that a weapon approved by the army board during the antebellum era was released that same year (much less the next year). Thus, for example the M1855 rifle/muskets did not get into the hand of troops until 1857. When Inspector Joe Johnston refers to the "old model" sabre, he is referring to the M1833. Hard to believe, but many mounted companies rode off to war armed with the M1833s.

Joe

This image was sold on Ebay about three years ago. I do not have the address of the winning bidder. Can't say if the fellow is a Yank or Reb, but it is easily the best period image I've ever seen of the Pistol Carbine.
